about the scholarship
Awarded in partnership with Techniques in Motion Dance School, this scholarship honors the vibrant spirit of Ernestine Highsmith, whose joyful dance went viral after Alex Highsmith was drafted to the NFL. Ernestine’s love for movement and faith-filled joy inspired the Highsmith family to create this award for young dancers.
Each year, one student receives a full year’s tuition. This scholarship celebrates the joy of dance, perseverance, and the legacy of faith, family, and fun.

the inspiration
The excitement in Alex Highsmith’s house could be felt for miles away after hearing Roger Goodell call the former Ashley High School standout’s name.
Alex, who played college football for the Charlotte 49ers, was selected by the Pittsburgh Steelers in the 3rd round of the NFL draft on Friday night.
The exhilaration was also visible about two hours away in Wilson where Alex’s grandmother lives with her daughter. Ernestine Highsmith got up out of her recliner and started dancing after hearing her grandson was going into the NFL.
